Is Manhunter better than The Silence of the Lambs?
A real minority holds that view. Manhunter is colder and more formally daring; Silence is the more complete thriller. Watching Mann's version first makes Demme's choices visible.
Are all these films based on real cases?
Most are direct tellings, like Mississippi Burning, The Killing Fields, Star 80 and A Cry in the Dark. A few filter real phenomena through fiction: River's Edge grew out of a real 1981 murder, and Henry draws loosely on Henry Lee Lucas's confessions.
